Limited Number Of Lightlife® Farmer’s Market Veggie Burgers Recalled Due To Undeclared Milk Allergen

Lightlife Foods in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is voluntarily recalling a limited number of packages of its Lightlife Farmer’s Market Veggie Burgers that may contain an undeclared allergen, milk. Certain packages of the Farmer’s Market Veggie Burgers may have inadvertently been filled with Lightlife Kick’n Black Bean Burgers, which contain an allergen, milk. The milk allergen is not declared on the Farmer’s Market Veggie Burger product label. This product was shipped to food stores and distributors nationwide.

The affected product, Lightlife Farmer’s Market Veggie Burgers, are packaged in 12.0-ounce, 4-count light blue bags with a Lightlife logo and picture of the veggie burger product on the front panel. This voluntary recall is limited to Lightlife Farmer’s Market Veggie Burgers in 12.0-ounce, 4-count light blue bags.

Salmolux Recalls Cold Smoked Salmon Products Because Of Possible Health Risk

Salmolux of Federal Way, WA is recalling its cold smoked salmon products because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Products, a total of approximately 4,930 lb, were distributed in AZ, CA and many other states through retail stores.

California Firm Recalls Ready-To-Eat Grilled Chicken Strips Due To Misbranding and Undeclared Allergens

Foster Farms, a Porterville, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 6,165 pounds of ready-to-eat grilled chicken breast strips that contain wheat and soy, known allergens, which are not declared on the product label.

The following products are subject to recall:
  • 4.5 lb. cases containing 12, 6-oz. trays of FOSTER FARMS GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST STRIPS BONELESS & SKINLESS WITH RIB MEAT 97% FAT FREE, with a use-by date of "JUN 22 2013" printed on each tray.

Smart & Final Expands Recall to Include Additional Production Dates Allergy Alert - Undeclared Wheat, Milk and Eggs in La Romanella Tri-Color Cheese Tortellini

Smart & Final of Los Angeles, Calif., which previously announced a recall of certain production dates of 2.5 lb - La Romanella Tri-Color Cheese Tortellini, is expanding its recall to include additional production dates due to undeclared wheat, eggs and milk. Acadian Fine Foods, LLC, a Church Point, La. establishment, is recalling approximately 17,037 pounds of pork stew and chicken stew products because of misbranding and undeclared allergens. The products contain whey and soy, known allergens which are not declared on the product label. 

The products were distributed for retail sale in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

San Francisco Nordstrom Café Worker had Typhoid Fever


An employee at the Nordstrom Café in San Francisco’s Stonestown Galleria has been diagnosed with typhoid fever and may have exposed customers to the disease, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Anyone who ate at the café on April 16, 17, 18, 20, or 27, 2013 may be at risk of infection. The health department advises any individuals who ate at the café on those days and experience symptoms such as fever, nausea, stomach pains, diarrhea, vomiting or headache to seek medical attention. Those symptoms generally appear within 8 to 14 days after exposure.

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, and it can be spread through food prepared by an infected person. The disease affects approximately 300 to 400 people in the U.S. each year, often during international travel. Health investigators believe the café employee contracted the disease while traveling abroad.

Raw Milk Products Connected with Campylobacter Coli Infections Outbreak


At least 31 residents of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula were sickened early this year in a Campylobacter outbreak linked to raw milk, according to a report from state health officials.

While this outbreak, which lasted from early January to mid-February, appears to be over, the farm whose raw milk caused the outbreak could still be serving contaminated product, according to the document, published by the Alaska Section of Epidemiology (SOE) last week.

Between January 8 and February 13, 31 people between the ages of 7 months and 72 years old fell ill with Campylobacter coli infections that were ultimately linked to a cow-share program on the peninsula.

Of the victims, two were hospitalized and four developed reactive arthritis, a painful inflammation of the joints caused by bacterial infections that can last up to a year. The SOE report reveals that health officials had identified the cow-share program on the peninsula as the outbreak source by February 14. The following day, SOE and the Office of the State Veterinarian informed the implicated dairy and the public of the problem; however the dairy continued to sell its raw milk products on the Kenai Peninsula and in Anchorage.

At that point, 29 cases of Campylobacter coli had been linked to the dairy. The following week, after two more cases were identified, health officials issued an updated health advisory, after which they say the cow share program provided them with a list of its customers that turned out to be incomplete and lacked contact information for most shareholders.

On February 22, health officials conducted an environmental investigation at the cow-share operation, collecting samples from cow feces, milk and areas of the farm that come into contact with the milk during production.

While the outbreak strain of Campylobacter coli wasn’t isolated from samples taken that day, three separate strains of Campylobacter jejuni were found in samples of cow feces, and Listeria monocytogeneswas cultured from a sample of raw milk.

Because other pathogenic bacteria were present on the farm, health authorities say its products could still cause illnesses in the future.
The SOE report offers the following advice to consumers, healthcare providers and producers of raw dairy items:
  • Health care providers should educate families about the risks of consuming raw dairy products. Informational materials are available at http://www.realrawmilkfacts.com/.
  • Providers should obtain stool cultures in patients with acute GI illness and history of raw dairy consumption.
  • Providers should promptly report cases of Campylobacter infections to SOE by calling (907) 269-8000.
  • Cow/goat-share operators should maintain current and legible shareholder/distribution records and share these records promptly with health officials if an outbreak is suspected to be linked to their farm.

Wisconsin Firm Recalls Frozen Pizzas Due To Possible Foreign Matter Contamination

Nestlé Pizza Company, a Little Chute, WI establishment, is recalling an undetermined amount of frozen pizzas that may be contaminated with extraneous materials and are the subject of a recall administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FSIS announced today.

The following products are subject to USDA recall: 
  • California Pizza Kitchen© Limited Edition Grilled Chicken with Cabernet Sauce.
  • DiGiorno© Crispy Flatbread Pizza Tuscan Style Chicken.
